چکیده

l. Response latencies. defined as the time between a d.c. electric shock and initiation of a fast-start (startle response) were measured for eight species of teleosts. 2. Fast-start response latencies varied from 10 to 36 cm. Highest values were found for individuals of two solitary species, Etheostoma caeruleum and Cottus cagnatus. Lowest values were found for Esox and Salmo gairdjleri. 3. Schooling in Perca paoescens, Lepomis macrochirus and Pimephales promelas significantly reduced fast-start response latencles by 7-16 msec. A 4 msec. reduction for Notropis cornutus was not significant. 4. No reduction in fast-start response latency was found for Pimephales promelas given the illusion of a school or for individuals greater than 15 cm from a school. 5. The observed variation in fast-start response latency would favour attack success of predators and escape success for schooled, but not solitary, presumptive prey. INTRODUCTION Variation in response latency could therefore have a Piscivorous behaviour of fish predators ranges from large effect on vulnerability of prey species. Furtherchasing to ambushing prey. The outcome of any intermore, social interactions, such as schooling could action between the predator and the prey fish depends affect the response, either by delaying fast-starts due on three factors; (a) relative performance (velocity, to the noise of other individuals, or reducing delay by acceleration rate): (b) manoeuvre (turning radius): (c) preparatory interactions. timing (delay in response to a protagonist’s The objective of this study was therefore to determanoeuvre); see Howland (1974), Webb (1976) and mine fast-start response latencies of a variety of freshElliott et al. Fast Times at Ridgemont High? The Effect of Compulsory Schooling Laws on Teenage Births

Fast Times at Ridgemont High? The Effect of Compulsory Schooling Laws on Teenage Births Research suggests that teenage childbearing adversely affects both the outcomes of the mothers as well as those of their children. We know that low-educated women are more likely to have a teenage birth, but does this imply that policies that increase educational attainment reduce early fertility? This paper...

Three-dimensional reconstruction of the fast-start swimming kinematics of densely schooling fish.

Information transmission via non-verbal cues such as a fright response can be quantified in a fish school by reconstructing individual fish motion in three dimensions. In this paper, we describe an automated tracking framework to reconstruct the full-body trajectories of densely schooling fish using two-dimensional silhouettes in multiple cameras. We model the shape of each fish as a series of ...

Skeletal muscle deformation in the lateral muscle of the intact rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss during fast start maneuvers.

Although there is an extensive body of information on the kinematics of the fast start response in teleosts, there is little information on the deformation of the skeletal muscle which produces the changes in body position during a fast start. This study presents preliminary information on the determination of skeletal muscle deformation with implanted ultrasonic dimension gauges in the intact ...

Improving Fast Charging Methods Using Genetic Algorithm and Coordination between Chargers in Fast Charging Station of Electric Vehicles in Order to Optimal Utilization of Power Capacity of Station

Fast charging stations are one of the most important section in smart grids with high penetration of electric vehicles. One of the important issues in fast chargers is choosing the proper method for charging. In this paper, by defining an optimization problem with the objective of reducing the charging time, the optimal charging levels are obtained using a multi-stage current method using a gen...
